Overview
Our short film "Sprout", takes place on a female run, small-scale sprout farm in Alliston Ontario. The film is loosely based on real events and the primary narrative portrays Jules and her mother Maggie (Allegra Fulton) over a destabilizing twelve hour period, as they come to terms with the loss of their farm.
Directed by Allie Yonick and Mara Da Costa Reis, "Sprout" explores the mother-daughter, nurturer/receiver dynamic and sheds light on a female owned, small-scale farm that doesn’t fit into a traditional agricultural model.
The sprout farm is a matriarchy but it becomes clear that the land and surrounding environment have systemic issues that make it extremely difficult for a particular type of mothering. There exists a lack of support for single mothers and female run small-scale farms alike.
What We Need
We realize that it's a difficult moment to be asking for funding in creative projects but we also believe that this short will help support farmers on the fringe (small-scale and local). At the very least it will help bring a greater understanding to their complexities and challenges.
We have been fortunate enough to receive assistance from cast and crew in creating this film but still require some assistance with production costs. The funds raised will go towards moving forward with the production of "Sprout" (equipment rentals, catering, and travel) as well as guaranteeing that Sweet Gatherings Sprout Farm is compensated for their time and the use of their land. We would be extremely grateful for any and all support for this project as it is very close to our hearts. Thank you for taking the time and consideration to read this through.
Donations of $250 will receive hand delivered sprouts from Sweet Gatherings Farm and $350 and up will receive Lost Meadows small batch honey or Sprouts From Sweet Gatherings and a credit in the film.
