We started Sweet and Savory Farmette just over a year ago fulfilling a lifelong dream. The property we purchased has great bones but was not a farm. In the past year we have built barns, coops, fenced pastures and so many other projects; some started and not yet finished, some yet to begin. It is hard work but we love every second of it. As you can imagine starting a farm is very expensive. We both work full time on top of our farm duties. We have four little rescue dogs and one very large Great Pyrenees named Fluffy who keeps us all very safe. We have honey bees, an angora bunny, chickens, turkeys, guinea foul and a peacock and his mate. But our greatest love is our Alpacas. Our herd consists of 6 alpaca; 2 older rescue boys, 2 beautiful Moms and their 2 cria (baby alpaca) that were born here on the Farmette.
Sassafras is the 2nd cria born to us just a short time ago on July 2nd. He has been the sweetest little boy since the moment he came into this world. If you lean down to his level he will happily give you little Eskimo kisses with his nose. Sass loves to run in the pasture, he runs so fast you think he can fly. His leg is broken but Sassafras will run again.
The fracture was a compound fracture, which means it broke so badly that it went through his skin. He needed to have a special surgery to clean it all up and put pins through the cast to keep it immobile. The estimate for his care at Tufts Large Animal Hospital was between $5,000- $6,000 however during surgery he aspirated, meaning particles from his stomach got into his lungs, so they have added additional monitoring along with supplemental oxygen. Hopefully he will not get pneumonia.
If you are able to provide financial help we appreciate it. If not we understand and ask that you keep him in your thoughts, send him prayers and good healing energy.
