Please help give Bonnie and the kids the gift of time with their Don. Don and Bonnie are the biggest hearted humble people I have ever met. Don is a father to Jason and Jordyn, an amazing grandpa to his grandbabies and the one friend that will always show up even when you tell him you're fine. Now they need our help. Don was Diagnosed with a liposarcoma in his right thigh in April. Biopsy in May, complications led to hospitalization at St. Elizabeth's for ten days. Afterwards he started 5 weeks of daily radiation in Omaha, an hour away. The 5 weeks were very tiring and painful for Don. He was admitted to UNMC for surgery prep, management of blood thinners, on August 28 to remove the large tumor in his leg and biopsy a suspicious spot in his left femur. The surgery went better than initially and they successfully removed the 3 pound tumor from his right thigh. The remaining tissues in his leg started to look like they were dying and they needed to schedule another surgery to clean out his wound and perform a skin graft to help close the wound up. The recovery process was long and excruciating. The day before he was to be released to a rehab facility, they performed a full body MRI and discovered large tumors had spread to his pelvis and wrapping around his spinal cord. At that point the doctors did not have a treatment option. After 7.5 weeks at UNMC the decision was made to come home for in home hospice care. Now my family is responsible to be full-time hospice caregivers. This process has been very long and has resulted in Bonnie using up all of her PTO and not being able to work for a while now. She is on FMLA to care for Don but is still working to cover the bills and insurance as much as she can. She doesn't ever ask for a thing and would refuse help but will always be the first to help. Between the countless drives to Omaha, multiple tanks of gas a week, and the families normal bills, it has been hard financially. She has been so conflicted by having to choose between going back to work to pay the bills and being with Don in his final days. This is the last thing we want the family to have to worry about!
