The Stoneciphers are a family like so many others- a mom and a dad, three kids and a lot of love. What makes them stand apart, however, is not only the genetic disease that is slowly, terrifyingly taking an incredible man from his family, it is the grace with which they face their new reality. Huntington’s is a brutal genetic disease that causes a progressive breakdown of the nerve cells in the brain. Given that every muscle movement and cognitive ability is controlled by these nerve cells, the physical, mental and psychological symptoms are devastating. And that’s just what Mike is going through. In the meantime, his family lives with the broken puzzle pieces Huntington’s Disease creates while trying to form their world back together into a new and remarkable picture. Mike’s wife, Tiffany, is nothing short of Superwoman. She works full time, cares for their home and children almost entirely on her own, and handles Mike’s increasingly complicated healthcare. As Mike’s disease continues to devolve, his access to his own home is becoming limited and even dangerous. Home healthcare has asked that multiple adaptations are made around their home for his safety. All of which brings us to the most basic of modern human needs- THE BATHROOM. It is also the ONLY bathroom in the house. It is important to note that both the toilet and bathtub require Mike to step up and down to reach them- a dangerous situation for someone with neuromuscular and balance issues. This is not a makeover meant for style, it is a necessary overhaul for safety and accessibility that will require a professional plumber, many expensive materials and a few willing volunteers. Every penny you donate (except for the small fee deducted by Gofund me to run the website) will go directly to the materials and expert plumbing work required. Anything left from your donation will be used to adapt other parts of their home as needed. Please give what you can to this most worthy of causes.
