Gitchi Sauking magazine
Donation protected
My name is Patrick Lavalley. I am Band Member of the Chippewas of Nawash Unceded F.N., of the Saugeen Ojibway Nation. I am raising money to publish the first monthy print magazine of the Saugeen Ojibway Nation.
Mission Statement: To celebrate the history, culture, successes, and to shine a spotlight on the current events, environment, and politics of the Saugeen Ojibway Nation (S.O.N.) within its Traditional Territory.
S.O.N. Traditional Territory is the Bruce Peninsula, south to the Maitland River and west to the Nottawasaga River by land. By water it includes the western half of Georgian Bay and the eastern portion of Lake Huron to the American Border north to a midway point south of Manitoulin Island. The content will include articles from and about the Chippewas of Nawash and Saugeen FN Bands as well as the Historic Saugeen Metis and the M'Wikwedong Native Cultural Resource Centre in Owen Sound. Though articles will relate to the S.O.N. and traditional culture, submissions are welcome from non-S.O.N. members.
The money that I am asking for will be to pay for articles, photos, printing and marketing the first issue. This won't be the end of my request for funds as I will no doubt need to ask your help until the magazine is on a firm footing. A host of other funding sources are being applied to, each for specific areas required for the operation of the magazine. I have a proposed launch of March 2017. Other funding sources may require me to move up my launch date, so every bit of support is welcome and necessary.
The cover photo shows mock-ups of eight potential covers. Each issue of 'Gitchi Sauking' will include timely articles on current events such as the S.O.N. decision on the Deep Ground Nuclear Repository, Land Claims, Fisheries Agreements, the Historic Saugeen Metis as well as regular monthly features such as Joint Council and Band Council Resolutions, Indigenous Law, Biographies, Sports, Arts, and Culture.
I have a long background in multi media, arts and entertainment, and history in the Native community. I was on the Editorial Staff of Aboriginal Voices magazine in the capacity of Research and Information, and also Marketing. A few years later I helped a friend create his business plan to publish TANSI, Toronto's first Native newspaper in twenty years. I also served as his Sports Editor and wrote three pages per issue. I was an artist in my youth, showing my work at Toronto art galleries such as A Space, Cecil Youngfox Gallery, Ontario Northland Gallery, and the Partisan Gallery, as well as Toronto City Hall and the Royal Ontario Museum. Locally, I demonstrate my art annually at the Bruce County Museum. I am a graduate of the Native Theatre School (Centre for Indigenous Theatre) and served as an Interim Board Member. From time to time I have worked on tv productions ranging from commercials, 1/2 hour dramas, documentaries and even a feature length miniseries in the capacities of associate, crew, and talent.
In 2012 I created Saugeen Ojibway Nation History on Facebook which currently has over 870 Likes. The content of the page drew hits from countries all around the world and every continent including Antarctica. The page had at its peak a reach of over 45,000 at a time when it had only 500 Likes. This was when our Mary Spencer boxed in the London Olympics. Over the past 30 years I have compiled over 300 volumes of topical history which I now hope to incorporate into 'Gitchi Sauking' magazine.
I am extremely thankful for the gofundme platform and for everyone who took the time to read my introduction. I hope to prove this with generous donation incentives and a top notch magazine. Miigwetch/Thank you
