Support for Uncle Larry Walsh

Elder, Uncle Larry Walsh (Taungurong), is a local cultural leader and storyteller. Inspired by his local First Peoples community, plus his own Kulin ancestral blood and connections to his Country, Uncle focuses specifically on storytelling, ensuring the cultural continuity of his ancient oral traditions and sees the young generation as the torch-bearers of the future.
Many of us have had the benefit of Uncle's deep wisdom and generosity over decades, and we all know how much he gives to the community – whether its popping in for cups of tea and yarns or his ongoing advocacy work.
It is now time to repay Uncle with all the love and respect we have for him.
Uncle Larry needs support for secure housing and accommodation while he receives upcoming medical care. As a community, we are raising this money to assist Uncle, alongside the invaluable support he already receives from family.
The donated funds will go towards: a bond on an apartment, rent for at least 8 months to a year, furniture, living expenses and transport.
Throughout recent months, Uncle has moved between temporary accommodation that is now inadequate in the current circumstances. With medical needs coming up, it is imperative he has a secure home and a base to work from, whilst more permanent options are made available.
Who are we?
We are a group of arts workers, colleagues and long-term friends who have worked with and known Uncle Larry for the last decade or more. As a close network, we have liaised with Uncle Larry himself and his family to put this campaign together.
We all deeply love Uncle and are forever grateful for all that he does for us.
What will the money go on?
This fundraiser will help Uncle get sorted while he makes longer plans. Uncle needs a ground floor flat in an inner suburbs location, in order to be around community, friends and family support.
The money raised will cover the following things:
- Bond on a rental
- At least 8 months - 1 years rental costs.
- White goods and furniture to set up the apartment
- Bills and services for at least 8 months
Funds will be managed by Footscray Community Arts Centre (ABN: 87 005 140 303 | Beneficiary Robyn Gawenda) and then be transferred onto Uncle Larry or directly to expenses listed in this campaign.
Now is the time to show how much we care and ensure that this beautiful storyteller is supported to continue to share with us his deep wisdom.
