Hi,
My name is Britt and I am 28 years old. The girl with the big blue eyes in the picture is my little sister Erin who is 26 years old. A few months ago we both got the news that we are positive for the BRCA (breast cancer and ovarian cancer) gene. This wasn't much of a shock since our mom was diagnosed two years ago with breast cancer. At that time, she also tested positive for the BRCA gene. Leading us to have a 50/50 chance of being positive as well. As a result of this we have both decided to undergo double mastectomy with breast reconstruction procedures. Being so young and just starting out in our careers the financial stipulation has already started to impact us between the genetic testing, preventative testing, many different doctor/specialist visits, along with high copays and outrageous insurance deductibles. We kindly ask for any support you can give. Although this has been one of the hardest choices we’ve ever had to make, we know that this is the best decision for our own personal health, it still is a huge surgery to even grasp the concept of and a crazy learning journey. We are committed to helping other young individuals become aware of this gene, educate others on options, and to give back to others who are going through the same struggles as we are. The most important thing we’ve learned is that there is no better way to overcome hard times then to have a very strong support system and we hope to continue building this around us and others. If you cannot help in any financial way, we ask you to please share this page so that together we can raise awareness on the severity of the BRCA gene mutations.
