Hearing the crushing news that Mikey had been diagnosed with a Stage 3 Neuroblastoma was truly just the beginning of a difficult chapter for the Boutilier family, and friends. Whether you are close to the family or not, the quote below from Nicole (Mikey's mother) certainly depicts the struggle they are up against, and the courage they have to overcome any obstacle:
"truth: cancer sucks. it totally sucks. it has turned my once vibrant three year old into an angry three year old. the doctors (who are amazing) teach you about side effects: throwing up, hair loss, loss of appetite or increase in appetitite, changing taste buds, even emotional changes. What they don't teach you enough about is the harder to deal with emotional side of it. Michael was always such an easy-going kid and now the slightest thing can make him angry. Sometimes he screams for a reason, sometimes no reason. It's these times of angry outbursts that make the rest of us struggle the most as we don't know what to say or do in the moment. His brothers miss the "old Michael" (as Jason says). It's easy to tell someone this, and they reply with 'do this, do that, say this" but it's not always easy to do. I've had a lot of people tell me i'm handling Michael's cancer so well - truth is i'm not handling anything at all. I'm dealing with it on a day to day basis and will continue to do the best I can. Having so much support from friends and family has helped me with all of this and I can't thank everyone enough....this cancer of Michael's is trying it's hardest to tear us apart - but it's SOL."
