Help Largin-Jacobson Family After Basement Wall Collapse
Donation protected
My name is Ash and I'm looking to help my aunt and uncle's family recover after a really bad storm. Over the weekend of August 9th, the exterior wall of their basement collapsed into the house, letting in over 6 feet of water. Thankfully no one was in the basement when this happened and everyone is currently safe, however it has compromised the structural integrity of the house and made it unlivable. We're waiting on an assessment to see if the house can be repaired, but there's a real possibility that it will be condemned. All of their vehicles were totaled. They thankfully have home and car insurance but we don't know how much of it is going to be covered. They're facing a lot of out of pocket expenses right now trying to house themselves, my two cousins, 2 dogs, and 2 cats. All of the funds raised will go directly to Josh Largin and Larissa Jacobson of West Allis.
On the night of August 9th, Josh went to check on all of his electronics in the basement and everything seemed fine. Two hours later when they went to bed they were woken up by a horrible loud noise and the entire house shaking. After running out of their rooms they could see water all the way up at the top of the stairs. Outside, the water had completely covered the back porch, they could only see the top of the swing they had just painted. Cars were floating down the street and being carried away. They stayed up for a while but eventually decided to get more sleep as there was nothing that could be done. They were trapped in the house.
It wasn't until the next day that they knew what had happened in the basement, as the water level was too high that night to even see it. Larissa woke up to a large group of people gathered in the driveway staring at the hole, sharing their disbelief. She had no idea what was going on and ran outside only to round the corner and see half the length of their house was missing the exterior basement wall, water still up to the top of the hole.
The house is currently unlivable. There are new cracks in the kitchen, dining room, and living room walls. Without the exterior basement wall, there isn't much holding up that section of the house and there's 2 floors of weight over that area. There's a lot of added living expenses because so much was left unsalvageable. One of my cousin's couldn't even recover a single pair of shoes. The basement had their washer, dryer, freezer, most of their household supplies, all of my uncle's video games consoles and electronics and more. We don't currently know if the house itself can be repaired. With so many homes damaged in this storm, we don't have a timeline on when insurance can come out and asses everything. They didn't have flood insurance but we're hoping that things will be covered because the damage was caused was from the wall collapse, but it's currently a wait. Until then, they're been having to board pets, and figure out next moves. Josh has been having to take time off of work to coordinate everything. I want to help them cover these extra expenses but also have a backup plan in case they can't get insurance to cover things.
My aunt and uncle mean the world to me and are some of the kindest people I've ever met. They've always kept a place open for any family or friends with nowhere to go, including me. This house was my home for the 3 years I worked on getting my art degree. I never could have done it without their support. If you're able to offer them any kind of help while they try to rebuild their lives, it would be extremely appreciated. If you are unable to give financially, please consider sharing this campaign with anyone you can.
Thank you so much, I appreciate it.
