Our family's star soccer player is fighting the largest battle of her life...and it has nothing to do with sports.
On April 22, 2016, Emma was admitted to Children's Hospital in Parker, Colorado with a complaint of abdominal pain. Things rapidly went south for her. After a quick "Flight for Life" ride to the Main Campus in Aurora, she ended up in a surgical suite one hour later.
The awesome medical staff at Children's told us that she ruptured her appendix "some time" ago, but no one knew it. The infection rapidly spread through her abdomen and is now ravaging her organs.
They were able to remove her appendix and "clean out" her abdomen, but the fight against the infection (and the hospital stay) is going to last for weeks. The experts are estimating 3 to 5 days in the Pediatric ICU and up to 10 more days in step-down units before she can sleep in her own bed.
After some quick research, I found that the average price of 1 day in the ICU is conservatively $5000.00. The ventilator, IV medication, and other stuff just adds to the cost. Todd and Debbie are a single income family, with basic medical insurance coverage. We know that the final bill will be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars, but no amount is to large to hug my niece again. All of the funds raised through this campaign will go directly to Emma's medical bills.
