Grand'Anse's Rebuilding Fund

Launched in 2010, ESPWA is a Haitian-led network of leaders registered in the US and in Haiti.  We are operationalizing the Haiti Community Foundation.  We've worked in the Grand'Anse (our Pilot Region) for the past 4 years.  We get support from the Inter-American Foundation, the Haiti Fund at the Boston Foundation, the Ansara Family Fund, the Global Fund for Community Foundations among others and many individual donors in the US and Haiti

Yesterday, we got devastating news from the Grand'Anse.

Report from Michael Broyles, re: MAF's initial survey flight:

"I just returned from a 6 hr evaluation of the entire South Coast of Haiti ..Decimated in each area. Lots of work to be done. A major long term concern is the complete loss of gardens in these areas. Food is already scarce. It's really bad.  Guys I just landed back from Jeremie. It's wiped out. Barely 1% of houses standing. The people are alive...they survived. But soon they will starve. They're cut off.”

What We Are Doing:

1)We built a strong regional network of 600 leaders in the Grand’Anse who hail from all sectors over the past 4 years.  We are leveraging/mobilizing it to organize relief and the first phase of “rebuilding”

2)Our people are working with local leaders with ties to the Grand’Anse to get resources for the communities.  Business people including Francois Chavenet, HCF Treasurer are donating the use of 6 trucks with drivers.  Francois will be using his tractor loader to help clear Jérémie’s roads

3) We’re talking to other Haiti-based networks like the COSPE, a national network of private schools to see how to connect our efforts

We’re working on starting a Phase I $100,000 crowdfunding campaign to support relief and early “rebuilding”:

1) $28,000 to support relief efforts through our network (roads have gotten rougher and very hard to navigate and people are looking at boats and planes to get supplies to GA towns that are stranded)-  We’ll have a special focus on hard to reach towns as large relief agencies tend to concentrate on larger towns.

2) $72,000 to go to communities ($6,000 per commune- there are 12 communes/counties).

Our Regional Committee will work with our local members to decide the allocation designed to help get people back on their feet (roofs, tools, small business stocks replacement.  This means injection of funds into the local economy.

We are in shock but moving forward.  One day, we were working on launching the Grand’Anse Regional Fund.  One major blow of nature later, our Pilot Region is wiped out and  we’re now working on relief and rebuilding.  There are no words to describe our feelings.

However, make no mistakes, WE WILL REBUILD!
