You never think it could happen to you or your family but it has happened to my family. We have all seen the devastation from Hurricane Matthew. Who thought it reach all the way to Charlotte, NC but it did.
My name is Deb Joyner and I am sharing what has happened to my son's family from this devasting storm.
October 8th, 2016 my son Stephen Joyner, his children: Emily, Wes, and Pyper, were at home when they heard loud crack. it had been raining 24 hours and the wind had picked up substantially with gusts of 40 MPH. Emily was in the kitchen in front of the sink. Suddenly the roof and walls began to collapse. Their dog Bo had already jumped up and pulled Emily away from the sink. As the walls came tumbling in Emily ran into the living room screaming, "We need to get out of here, now!" Her father, Stephen, was well aware as a tree limb had punctured through the roof and attic, ending up beside his head where he was sitting holding his 18 month old daughter, Pyper. The crashing became louder and the entire house shook. Tree limbs, debris, and insalation showered down on the family. They exited the house as quickly as they could. The children ran next door to their adult cousin's house. Stephen called his wife, Misty, who was at a Lady's Ministries brunch with me. Immediately upon hearing of the disaster, all the ladies began praying as we exited to get home.
We can not express how shocking it was to see the damage when we pulled up in the driveway. At first looking at the front of the house, it just looks a little odd with a broken front window. But then...walking around to the back of the house we realized that the tree, twelve feet in diamenter according to the firefighters who responded, had crushed the back of the house nearly dividing it in half. We were so glad that everyone was safe but after inspection of the interior, all was lost. Thank the Lord it had not happened at night. If it had, Wes, their son, would have been severly injured or possibly killed! As it was the family narrowly escaped without injury or worse. The most valuable things in the world walked away unscathed! Praise the Lord!
The firefighters and police who responded were amazed that no one had been injured. They informed the family that it was no longer inhabitable. They were now...homeless! They lost everything including their clothing, shoes, beds were crushed, washer, dryer, dishwasher, hot water heater were crushed and the extent is still not completed on all that was lost. We are using this site to assist in the many needs they have including rebuilding as they had no insurance.
Stephen, Misty and their 3 children will be very thankful for any assistance you can give to them. To the firefighters, police, neighbors, and friends who rallied around us immediatley after the devistation, we can never thank you enough! Your love and support was and still is what keeps us moving forward!
God bless you all!

The living room:

Their son's room. Completely destroyed:
More of their son's room. We couldn't open the door to get in.

Outside their backdoor. Water heater is right under the tree and was shoved through the wall.

More of the outside. Wall is leaning outward all the way to the other end of the house.

The top of the tree. Over their son's bedroom, bathroom, and daughter's bedroom.
