My dad, Mark Silver, is the youngest and strongest 58 year-old around. Which is why I was devastated to learn that he had suffered a traumatic spinal chord injury this past Sunday.
That morning, my dad had taken his weekly soft-sand run down at the Santa Monica pier. When he was finished, he dipped in the ocean to cool off.
We don't know exactly what happened next to cause his injury.
What we do know is that despite a severely broken neck, my dad was able to tread water for 30 seconds while he flagged down the surfers and lifegaurds who would save his life.
Somehow, after 10 minutes without a pulse, 6 hours of intensive neurosurgery, 14 bolts in his cervical spine, 2 lungs full of Santa Monica Bay water, and 3 days in a coma, my dad woke up...
Here are a few things about my dad that everyone should know:
He is witty, bright, and self-effacing. He would write a much better gofundme blurb than I ever could.
His sense of humor is infectious. This past week in the ICU, my dad's jokes (primarily at the expense of his nurses) have kept our family afloat.
He is strong-willed, and stubborn to a fault. Which is how I know he has what it takes to make an incredible recovery.
He takes his life as a man perpetually on the verge of greatness.
The next few weeks and months will be incredibly trying for all of us. And while I have no doubt that my dad will take on his rehab with grit and achieve incredible results, even Superman needs a little help.
If you are interested in being a part of Mark's recovery:
Mark will need visitors and homecooked meals and cards and constant reminders of that he is a miracle.
Any donations will go towards defraying the astronomic costs of spinal injury treatment. We are so appreciative of your help.

My dad's very best years are still ahead of him. Those who love him know it. He knows it. That's just the kind of guy he is.
With gratitude,
-Ike, Augy, & Kellen
