Jim Collins and Jim Crawley are looking to help meet some of the needs of our dear friend, Alma College Alumnus, and Sigma Chi Fraternity brother, Ed Hilton. Ed’s wife, Elise, has shared with us that he has had a challenging year and now is faced with some significant medical issues.
On July 13, 2015, Ed went to the hospital for a "routine out-patient" procedure, but it's been anything but. Shortly after the procedure, he developed a massive hematoma in his right arm, which led to compartment syndrome. This presentation required emergency surgery just to save his arm.
As a part of that procedure, surgeons made three long incisions on his right forearm. Two were sutured up and one was left open to drain. Unfortunately, that procedure generated a different set of problems and he then developed bleeding complications that required another hospitalization.
On July 22, he had his third surgery to close the remaining incision. Because of the nature of the previous procedure, this required the services of a plastic surgeon and a skin graft. He’s now slated to remain in the hospital at least six more days.
While Ed and Elise do have insurance, the bills are still mounting and the family has long operated on a tight budget. Fortunately, Ed is able to take a disability leave from work, but Elise cannot take family leave (the organization she works for is too small).
Long hospital stays and ensuing therapy have many costs: gas, food, uncovered co-pays, medications, etc. Our hope is that we might be able to offer some assistance so that the additional financial burden is one anxiety that can eased. We don’t want this to be a huge worry for Ed as he works to recover.
We’ve set the account up so that we are simply the creators. Access to any of the funding is limited to Ed and Elise from this point forward. Any help is most appreciated
