Hi, my name is Bernadette Anderson @bernionthemove. I am an IT Consultant, based in London and actively try and do a good deed every day no matter how big or small. I do various bits of volunteer work for different causes such as Crisis at Christmas for the homeless. I am also an Ambassador for a charity in India, 'Snehadeep Trust for the Disabled' and this year I have woken up to the fact that thousands of refugees are in desperate need! This is the first post I wrote when I finally realised that those fleeing countries of war need our help...
“Tonight, I feel even more grateful to be at home in a warm and safe environment, that I can choose when I want to go to the bathroom and in private so I can wash and freshen up. I am lucky that I can walk a few steps to the kitchen to eat and if I needed to walk to the local shop and buy what I need. There are 60,000 refugees in Greece who don't have this simple 'luxury'! We are blinded from the real situation going on in our neighbouring countries. Of all countries to be helping those in need is Greece, financially crippled, but yet the locals find it in their hearts to help others...amazing! You'll be hearing more from me on this! Sleep warm and tight tonight!”
Since then I have been part of a movement of love made up of independent volunteers from all over the world. We have united through Facebook groups and are actively involved in supporting the refugees who are most in need. Greece and France are two countries that I know need great help. I have been in Paris handing out sleeping bags and also been out to Athens twice this year to befriend, teach, play with the children – doing whatever I can to be a positive distraction from the daily turmoil these people face in their lives.
Currently refugees live on the streets, in tents, in squats, in camps. Some are lucky enough to have been put into housing, but even then there are little other means of support for nourishing food and a change of clothing.
I have set up this page to so that 100% of money raised (excluding any fees through this site) will be spent on much needed supplies which may be a combination of food and clothing.
