This photo, this summer, I couldn't have known, would change my course forever. A 21 year old girl, on an adventure to Alaska, to cut out, to get free, to see the last frontier. I could never have imagined that my little cannery job would open up a world for me. A world of fish.
The phenomena of fishing then and now amazes me. To watch the men and women go out and hunt for our food, and to come back with boats sagging and brimming with fish and the workers waiting to receive them creates an energy that has been unparelled for me. And the food! Salmon roasted by fire every night, it left an indelible impression on me.
My fish story includes 3 years of migrating cannery work in the mid nineties, traveling between Kenai, Valdez, Naknek, and Dutch Harbor. In 1998, I moved to Portland and settled right in. About a decade later, I again picked up my fish torch, and began working at a high end grocery in the fish department. And the love was rekindled.
My passion for fish was what provided me with a deep satisfaction with my craft. For nearly a decade I was there, building my skillset, building my friendships, fueling my passion, for fish, fishing families, sustainable ocean and fishing practices, and developing recipes for both work and home. I'm still not sure whether there was more fun to be had, or fish to be filleted!
Just over 2 years ago, I again set sail, and embarked on a new journey with my friend Mike. We linked up with the amazing crew at Flying Fish Sustainable Seafood, and I began selling fish out of a truck in my very own neighborhood! The last years have been incredibly fulfilling, as I have become part of my neighborhood's meals and lives.
An opportunity to purchase my own space and run my very own independent business presented itself to me, and I am diving straight into this next adventure. I am purchasing and renovating a new trailer. I will need to buy a new fridge, maybe two! I need to transfer all of our licenses.
This help means so much to me for several reasons...the chance to stay in my neighborhood and provide a service to my community is so important to me. The opportunity to educate and encourage people to buy fish that is being harvested in a sustainable way is a great privilege. And you know, Pixie.
If you know me, you know that I love fish, that I am commited to providing clean, sustainable fish, and that I don't shy away from hard work. Thank you for reading this, and any help is so appreciated. FISH ON!
Again, thanks. Kris Ramsey
