As all of you know, Hooterville has been a vital part of the tradition and social life of our fraternity for decades. Going to hang out on the Maury has always been a benchmark of W&L life. We believe that Hooterville is the best spot on the river, and as college students we are so lucky to have the opportunity to live at such beautiful location.
Unfortunately we came close to losing Hooterville for our use as housing for members of our fraternity. Due to the new Third-year Housing rules, all Juniors will be forced to live on campus in the new buildings currently under construction. Six Junior SAE’s have typically lived at Hooterville in the past, but because of these new rules and the small size of the rising senior class, we will be unable able to rent the house. The landlord has told us that if the house is not rented for the 2016-2017 school year, he will likely choose to rent to a group of law school students, or a family for at least three years, if not an indefinite amount of time. This would ultimately result with our group losing Hooterville forever.
This past month, we approached Michael Stearns, the landlord, about striking a potential deal. Fortunately, Mr. Stearns told us that he has always enjoyed working with the SAEs and that he has a great understanding and appreciation of the tradition of Hooterville, and what it has meant to us and our experience at W&L. He has done us a huge favor by offering the house for a 12 month lease. This allows us to cover almost all of the cost as a group.
Our goal is to pay for the house for one year as a fraternity. This will cost us approximately $24,000, plus utilities. This will allow us to keep the house in use, and continue to keep it within the fraternity for decades to come. However even after increasing dues for the upcoming 12 months, we still come short by about $10,000. After talking to many W&L SAE alumni, we have received a lot of positive feedback in regards to helping out with the remaining cost. We are reaching out to all of you to ask for assistance in reaching this goal. If you would like to help out, we will accept any and all donations, and any gift will be greatly appreciated.
