Hello all! Our good family friends, Neil Weinstein and Annette Jensen, run a non-profit called Education First Cambodia (EFC), which supports 24 highly talented Cambodian female university students who would not otherwise have the opportunity to get a degree. The young women, among the brightest in the country and also among the poorest, come from remote rural areas far away from the universities in Phnom Penh. With Education First Cambodia’s support these young women attend the most respected universities in Cambodia, most focused on STEM fields in which women are typically underrepresented.
Neil and Annette reached out to Abby and me to see if we'd help raise funds for these women to take a trip to Angkor Wat in February 2017. Abby had an amazing experience traveling to this incredible place in June, and was saddened to learn that many Cambodians never get to see their own country’s wonder of the world. We've both learned - and grown - so much from our travels, and are tremendously thankful for the opportunities we've had to do so. We wanted to help give these women a chance to explore, too. Instead of asking you for plain donations, though, we thought we'd get a little creative.
The two of us are going to be running half marathons in our two different cities less than a week apart - Abby, the Holiday Half Marathon on December 11th and Liz, the Lee Valley VeloPark Race on December 17. Bet on who you think will run faster by donating to our GoFundMe page. Even numbered donations for Team Liz, odd numbered for Team Abby. (Will Liz's stress fracture setback give Abby the chance to finally reclaim her high school glory days? Google "Abby Markowitz GHS track" - her game face might sway you.) All proceeds go to EFC.
Our shameless plug: motivate two retired track athletes to stay in shape while contributing to a good cause!
Thank you, so much.
Love,
Abby and Liz
