July 20, 2016 Robert Stewart received a liver transplant from his live donor Amy. I'm not sure there are words adequate enough to describe this amazing gift of life. The surgeons at Northwestern Memorial Hospital can only be referred to as genius as they not only performed the transplant but creatively used life saving techniques when complications occurred the week following the transplant. Robert's positive attitude and optimistic approach to his healing has been noted by the staff as a major component in the success of the transplant, and he is now fondly referred to as a crowd favorite! Three weeks have gone by and the donor and recipient are doing exceptionally well.
Before, during, and after the transplant, we have been blessed by amazing friends. We received an abundance of prayers, gifts, gift cards, money, visits, advice, and priceless words of encouragement--all of which helped carry us through each and every moment. I'm not sure how you can have enough words to say 'thanks' but I do know that 'paying it forward' will be a part of the rest of our lives. I know we both already have some great ideas!
Today I humbly set up this GoFundMe site. First and foremost, this is for those of you who have already expressed an interest in sending us money as this is a efficient way to make it an easier more documented transaction. As most of you know, Robert has been ill and not worked for a few years. The surgery setback and all the costs it incurred, being away from home and the related costs, and being the only caretaker, has wiped out our finances including our savings.
I'm confident we will make a comeback. I have no hesitation of working hard as I take care of helping Robert and his new liver become strong. If you are in a position to donate money, we can't be more grateful. If you are in a position to donate a gift card, food, or time, please contact us directly.
