Stan Libed Memorial Fund

The Berkeley Police Association is establishing this page to honor retired Officer Stanley Libed and his family. Stan tragically passed away on March 1, 2022 after a short bout with cancer. Stan was an amazing police officer that served the city of Berkeley for the entirety of his 24-year career. He was known for the tenacity that he brought to the job each and every day. He was relentless in his pursuit of serious criminals and keeping the community he served safe. Stan literally worked to the day that he retired, ending his last shift with a foot chase. For those of us lucky enough to work around him, we got to see what it meant to be a real police officer.

Stan spent the majority of his career working patrol on graveyards and swing shifts. He also had special assignments in the Drug Task Force unit and the Special Investigations Bureau. Stan retired from Berkeley PD on October 30, 2017.

Stan loved police work so much that he was aspiring to come out of retirement and wear a badge again as a Maui Police Officer.

Stan was also a devoted family man, putting his family above all. Stan spent his retirement with his family, enjoying life to its fullest. He and his son, Max, became certified scuba divers and traveled to numerous destinations, including Hawaii, to enjoy time together.

The following are words that were shared by Stan’s close friend Randy Files:

“There are so many reasons we all loved Stan or Peanut as a few of us called him. (A Coast Guard nickname). Stan had a zeal for this profession, a special talent for this calling.

He had a desire to do the hard work and put bad guys in jail that was phenomenal. Stories will be told for years to come about his exploits. Those of us who got to see it first hand or were lucky enough to be a part of it were forever touched by his dedication, his instinct and his wit. SEU in its 90’s heyday was a better place to work because of Stan. Heck BPD was a better place to work because of Stan.

If you were lucky enough to be his beat buddy, team mate or even his supervisor you knew felony arrest and good times were going to happen en mass. All the while providing laughter and bringing humanity to some ludicrous situations.

Stan is and always will be one of the good guys. I remember how he would be one of the first to volunteer for the fleet week volunteer service just to give back. Often missed by many who see the countless felony arrests is how big his heart was. He loved his wife and family in a spectacular manner. He loved being a police officer. Those of us who knew him were not surprised in the least when he said 'I want to go to Maui PD, can I use you as a reference?' Stan still had a lot to give.

To learn of his illness, see him in ICU and then later learn of his passing was a nuclear gut punch. He was a physical phenom, this wasn’t supposed to happen. I remember him telling a suspect, you don’t want to fight me; I curl your body weight, 10-15 with a smile.

The family could use your prayers, help and support. Please give generously and do so with your best Stan memory, a smile and a positive thought of one of the best of us to walk through those hallways at BPD.”

Stan is survived by his wife (Shannon Tran), 16-year-old son (Max), his twin 14-year-old daughters (Samantha and Sydney), sister (Shirley Libed) and his brother (Sam Libed).

Your generous donations will go towards helping Stan’s family in their time of need and making sure that they are as well taken care of as Stan took care of us.
