First, thank you for taking the time to click, read and maybe even share this link. It took me a while to write this as I am having physical limitations to do so and also feeling emotional about having to write this.
For those of you that may not know me, my name is Deme. I have seen lots of gofundme accounts but never thought I would make one for myself. But here I am...and how do I make mine sound legit with all the gofundme accounts that are out there that we see on the daily?
For most people that know me, you know me for being strong, happy, funny, never let anything stop me, being independent , lending a hand or hug or smile or whatever I have to others. My two favorite quotes are tattooed on my arms...."smile breathe, and go slowly" the other is " you are stronger than you think"
On July 23, I was in a motorcycle accident that required tibial plateau surgery( big bone in leg broken near knee cap) and a broken hand. I have been in the hospital or the rehabilitation center since.
With rehab I've gone from having a foley, to using a bed pan, to finally being able to use the commode...progress. I went from 15mg down to 10mg of OxyContin every 3 hours....progress. With rehab I can lift my right leg up without screaming in pain...progress. But with these small steps, I still have a LONG way to go. 3-4 months before I can put weight on my leg which means I will have to learn how to walk again. So why the gofundme?
I do have health insurance but live alone and will require home health as well as physical therapy in home and eventually outpatient. With my job, I do not have sick time, PTO or FEMLA or any benefits like that. So I am not getting a paycheck for the next several months. I'm a surgical tech by profession but I work for a staffing agency now instead of being staff at one particular medical center.
My my right leg and right hand are in an immobilized and cast so there are things that I can't do in my current status.....
assistance with meals because I can't cook
need to purchase a commode because I will need the help in the bathroom at home because it sits higher than a regular toilet
I am having to inject myself every 12 hours to prevent blood clots and will need a sharps container to properly dispose of sharps
rides to and from my appointments with either Lyft or Uber or friends
laundry help because of the stairs and unable to carry things
help with grocery shopping
packing and moving help to put things in storage
dog walking help
Thank you again for taking the time to read. No amount is too small or too great. It's difficult to be in this position. The day before my accident I had just accepted a job offer at a medical center in Florida and was excited about being closer to my family in Georgia. I was excited about the change. And in another moment my life was turned upside down. This is temporary but I do need help for now. I can't wait til the doctors tell me I can use my right hand or tell me I can put weight on my right leg. Right now I'm practicing jumping up steps with my left leg and left hand, it's been quite difficult but I'm doing it.
I promise to give updates as they come. Right now I'm still in the rehab facility but will soon be discharged to home to begin the next chapter.
