Hi my name is Katie Howarth, I am a 25 year old women from Brisbane, Australia living with disabilities. Currently I am residing in a day respite centre whilst I wait for a suitable home for me to live in, assisted by full time carers. This is the first time that I will be in an independent living arrangement from my mother who has provided care for me since birth. I have very challenging and 24/7 care needs and I am completely dependent on my carers and family for all of my basic needs.
Lately my pain and medical needs have changed and have become exacerbated. For me to transition into my new home, I need to have a MRI on my brain, jaw and spine to fully understand my exact requirements for medication and support needs.
Unfortunately, I need full anaesthetic due to the nature of my disabilities and not being able to sit still or comprehend instructions. This part of the MRI cannot be bulk billed. I am on a public waiting list but this will take many months (most likely November but not guaranteed) to access the initial appointment with many more possible months to the actual MRI date. The longer I wait for independent living arrangements the more despondent, sad and angry I become. I need $2000 to be able to have this MRI privately. I am on a disability pension with full support needs which barely covers my day to day needs and medication.
I am also looking for support to help me purchase the very basic household items I will need for my new home which include things like a fridge, washing machine, couch and possibly a second hand car so that my carers will be able to continue to help me be a part of the community and go on outings.
I would be so appreciative if my family, friends and those who care could spare a little change to help me achieve my goal of living in my own place with the support I require to live a safe and happy life.
My disabilities are and not limited to Cornelia Delangé Syndrome, Autism and an Acquired Brain Injury which is the result of a previous medical emergency. I have digestion issues which cause me great pain, I do try to manage this pain by myself but most days the pain causes me to lash out at those who care for me. I am nonverbal and my behaviours are a result of the frustration and my sometimes angry disposition. I am a happy and mischievous young lady on the good days, I enjoy being out in nature, swimming, floating and swinging high in the air. I laugh, I sing with my throat and I dance to the music I hear (these words were put together by my family who love and care for me as I am unable to communicate this myself. Please do not hesitate in contacting them for more details if you would like to know more about me).
