Ms. Foreman, Ovarian Cancer Patient
I was initially diagnosed with ovarian cancer in June of 2014, when I had an abnormal pap smear. The tumor, that was attached to my right ovary, grew to be the size of a basketball before they took it out in August of 2014. They also did a full hysterectomy & removed my stomach lining. I had to be off work for months while I healed up from the surgery & received chemotherapy treatments for the remainder of the year & half of 2015 as well. Well the cancer has returned, as I was re-diagnosed with ovarian cancer in July of 2016. This tumor is located between my vagina & my rectum. They say that I have an aggressive form of ovarian cancer that is reoccurring, which means that even when it's removed, that it will return every 6 months to a year. The first doctor at Harris Health Systems told me that they could remove the tumor, but that they want to remove a portion of my rectum & intestines & I'm gonna have to wear a ileostomy bag for the rest of my life because the tumor was the size of a baseball. So I wanted a second opinion before I had this done because of the life-changing impact that this surgery would have on my life. So I went to MD Anderson Cancer center 2 months later because initially they wouldn't except my insurance but then they called me after some months & said that they would allow my insurance to pay 60% & that I would have to pay the remaining 40% of my costs. So I underwent extensive testing there & the doctors there told me that the tumor was now bigger than a grapefruit & that they were refusing to operate because the tumor was embedded within alot of veins & organs & could possibly do more damage than good to remove. And they also told me that if it wasn't removed that I had approximately 2 years to live. They recommended chemotherapy to try to shrink it, but made sure to additionally advise me that they didn't feel that it would shrink because it was such an aggressive type of cancer that would continuously reoccur due to endometriosis. I am asking for help because I am constantly at the doctors office, as I am today and all the travel to different doctors, hospitals & copays are very expensive. Currently I decided to go back to the first doctors & they are planning to operate. But they are saying that I'm going to be in the hospital & rehabilitation for months following the surgery because of its size & position, if it is successful. But the surgery date is set for September 13th, but I haven't shared with them the test results from MD Anderson yet. They will see them on September 11th. And so they may or may not still operate when they see them & if not then I'm off to find another doctor who will accept either partial or all of my insurance for my expenses to operate, because I'm just not willing to except the advice to just sit by & wait to die. I also have a very large medical bill at MD Anderson Cancer center because I still have to pay 40% of my costs there & I am rarely able to work. Thanks for your consideration.
