We are going to adopt a family that has experienced life changing circumstances this year. We are going to not only take up donations but we are going to ask for volunteers to go out and change the condition of the home in which they live.
Below you will read about the Sidney family and the health problems in which the father Matthew has had this past year, where he experienced a stroke that has made him start over in speech, walking, and everyday simple routines. He is now battling with stage 5 kidney failure. But behind all of that, the family has dealt with the misfortune of having a contractor walk off the remodeling of the family home after much of the work was paid for in advance. So on top of the medical expenses they have no money left to get someone to finish the work that was started. The work that was done, was done with no permit therefore the county ordered a stop work, so everything has been removed and work has begun again the last week of September by some volunteers.
We are asking you to help this family with giving them a better life in years to come. This can be done monetarily or by giving your time volunteering. We have started, on Oct 3rd, Universal Forest Products with locations in Burlington and Liberty donated and delivered a truck load of lumber that is being used to frame the room addition the correct way. Once the framing is complete we will setup days for people to volunteer to do things such as hanging sheetrock, putting up vinyl siding, painting, plumbing, cleaning and landscaping.
We know what the family needs, however, we want to meet those needs and give them more. We need your help. We have setup this GoFundme page where you can give money to, or you can contribute cash or checks to Danny Ouzts. Make checks out to Danny Ouzts c/o Sidney Homes. Danny will also be the one that is coordinating the weekend volunteers and working with the county to get the job done correctly.
Learn more about the Family:
Matthew Sidney is an amazing man who suffered a major medical trauma. An ischemic stroke on December 29th 2015, which put Matthew into a hospital bed at Duke and then to Danville for 3 months. Mathew has been home for 6 months and is doing better but still has a long row to hoe.
Matthew Sidney has long been a familiar face at the Caswell County Parks and Recreation Department. For the past 10 years he could be counted on to greet you with a smile, and the energy to light up a room. He was often found rallying the children of the county for various sports, working with parents and coaches and volunteers. If you live in Caswell County, you know Matthew Sidney.
Matthew's wife Latoya worked as a Child Nutritionist at Danville Public Schools. They have 4 beautiful children, Armonti, 19, Matthew Jr, 11, Julius, 9, and Thalya is the little sister of the bunch at 3 years old. Those who know him would say that Matthew is a loving husband, great provider, outgoing person, and committed man of faith.
Matthew volunteers at his church, Miracles in Motion in Martinsville, VA. He plays the drums, works with the children, and helps out in so many ways. Matthew is kind to everybody, especially to the children at his work who come from broken families. He strives to be a positive male role-model to those who really need that stabilizing influence.
Matthew’s wife, LaToya Sidney, says that he is such a good natured person, who is always happy.
So how did this young, healthy 35 year old man have a stroke? Originally, he went to the dentist to get his wisdom teeth removed, but the dentist could not remove the wisdom teeth because Matthew’s blood pressure was too high (215/136). The morning of his dentist’s appointment, Matthew had a headache, saw black spots, and was having dizzy spells. He thought he was getting a cold, and he didn’t tell anyone about his symptoms because he didn’t want to worry anybody. Matthew’s doctors would discover later that he was in renal failure/kidney failure. Matthew ended up in the hospital, where they were able to get his blood pressure down enough for him to go home on December 24th.
Matthew spent the next few days with his family but on the 29th, after shopping at Belk’s in the mall, Matthew started feeling numbness in his fingers and toes. LaToya sat Matthew down on a bench and called 911. By the time EMS arrived, Matthew’s numbness had ended, but the EMTs convinced Matthew to go to Duke’s emergency room. When Matthew arrived at Duke, his numbness had returned. Matthew had a stroke, and his left side was “gone”.
Matthew’s doctors estimate that his recovery will be at least six months to one year. His speech is slowly coming back to him. Also, he has learned to walk again and needs no help from a walker.
But Matthew knows that he is not alone in his recovery. LaToya, who has taken time away from her job, is with him almost every day, taking him to dialysis appointments 3 days a week and being there for everything Matthew needs. His family and community are showing their love and support as well. The Caswell Community and surrounding areas are showing their support through financial donations and prayers to meet the family’s immediate needs. Matthew and his family are on several churches’ in North Carolina and Virginia prayer lists.
If ever there was a family that deserved your goodwill, it is the Sidneys. The impact that Matthew has had on the Caswell County Community is far reaching. With your assistance we can put the ripple going in their direction and ease the financial burden.
