My Study Abroad-Japan

Hello! I am Rachel Fricks. I'm currently a Theatre Arts and Art History double major at Columbus State University. I primarily study historical fashion as well as costume construction for theatre.

This year Columbus State's Business and Technology department is offering a two week study abroad opportunity in Tokyo. This would both help me fulfil a class requirent as well as visit a country I have dreamed about traveling to for ages.

Let's look at pricing for the trip! First is my application fee, which is $200. This is the most urgent payment as I need to apply as soon as possible in order to apply for my grants and scholarships for this trip. The application deadline is February 10th 2017.

The first large payment, which is $1,576, is also due February 10th 2017.

The final payment is due March 10th 2017 and is also $1,576!

Besides these required amounts, it is also recommended that we have at least $300 dollars per week in additional money for food and other cultural experiences!

I will be applying for both the grants and all scholarhips which are available to me for this trip as well, so I will subtract money from my goal as that process goes along and I am able to get these funds through the school.
I will also be contributing as much of my own money as I can save, so with every $100 of my own money I save, I will reduce that amount from my goal as well.

To give some background, I have always been one to love costumes and dressing up even from the time I was small. But it was my interest in Japanese culture and media which sparked my passion for my area of study in costuming. From beautiful traditional kimono to cosplay and street fashion, Japan really captivated me. Without this interest I never would have discovered what I love doing in theatre, nor would I have the same eye for historical dress that I do today.
It would mean the world to me to be able to visit the cultural center which has shaped my life and motivations so profoundly.

The class requirement which I will be fulfilling is ITDS 5555, for which I will include the course description below:

"ITDS 5555. Interdisciplinary Special Topics (3-0-3)
Pre-requisites: Junior standing or above, an overall GPA of 2.5, if undergraduate; and a preliminary statement of expectations and plan of study. This course is designed to provide junior/senior undergraduate students or graduate students with knowledge of various special topics that are interdisciplinary in nature."

This would help me fulfil my Section I required electives for my degree in Art History.

On this trip I will also be able to explore many cultural experiences. Such as various museums, like Studio Ghibli and Toei, various research and technology labs, and traditional sites such as Mt. Fuji and Sensoji Temple.
