My name is Stacey and on September 17,2016 I left to Seattle with my boyfriend. My sweet German shepherd Isabelle was being watched at my parents acreage.
September 18, my sister left her outside while away for a couple hours. Upon returning she found Isabelle with a very swollen leg and unable to walk.
Monday September 19, Isabelle was taken to Crossroads Vet in Medicine Hat, AB where X-rays were done. All x rays came back good.
The vet then assumed it was a soft tissue injury(rolled her ankle or something of the sort) and sent Isabelle home with anti inflammatory and pain medication.
Fast forward to Friday September 23, I arrived home and immediately rushed Isabelle back to the vet cause something didn't seem right. She seemed way too hurt to me for it to be a soft tissue injury. I took her back to Crossroads vet. This time they ran blood work to make sure Is had no infection or any kind of abnormalities in her blood. Results
came back all normal and good. This left my vet stumped and after much discussing with colleagues they told me they thought my dog may have cancer in her leg and referred to Western Vet Specialist in Calgary, AB.
Wednesday September 28, Isabelle and I packed up and hit the road to Calgary to see the specialist . Fearing that "C" word , I was completely relieved after further X-rays when the vet informed me it was not cancer !!!!! However , it was determined Isabelle is suffering from a subluxation(which is basically a fancy word for dislocation) in her hock joint as well as a fracture. Due to Isabelle being 100lbs and incredibly active the vet said surgery is absolutely needed and that this will not heal on its own. The surgery she is needing is called Partial Tarsal Arthrodesis.
I wasn't sure, so Isabelle was booked into another apppointment. This time at Newell veterinary in Brooks, AB October 3.
I wanted one last opinion on if surgery is necessary. Again this vet agreed due to her size and activity level it is impossible this can heal on its own, as well leaving her this way is risking that she blows her other leg by having to compensate with all that extra weight on it.
For the time being she is in a splint to keep it stabilized and keep it from worsening.
Isabelle is everything to me. I was her 4th home by the time she was 9 months old... she is so incredibly special to me and without this surgery I will have to put my best friend down. She hasn't even reached her 4th birthday and I am not ready to lose her. I absolutely cannot afford to pay for this surgery by myself :(. All of these vet visits so far regarding this have already cost me close to $2000.
On top of that,
the quote for surgery from Western Vet Specialist in Calgary is $5000.
If you have anything you can spare to help us, it is forever appreciated.
THANK YOU.
