On July 20th 2016 Dori was rushed to Nanaimo Regional Hospital due to an uncontrollable bleed from her throat. She was admitted and observed over night and in the morning she and her daughter were told she had cancer. Dori was then scheduled for a biopsy on July 28th and the results were not favorable.
On August 4th Dori was diagnosed with throat cancer-squamous cell carcinoma of the right tonsil, topback of tongue and extended into the lymph nodes on the right side of her neck. The tumor is classified as stage 3.
As a result of the diagnosis, Dori headed to the cancer clinic in Victoria on August 12th. She was accompanied by her parents, Bob and Linda, sister Keri, her daughter Madi and Me, Carla. We supported Dori while she met with doctors, had a ct scan, blood taken and a mask made for her radiation treaments. The mask is used to hold Dori completely still on the table while the radiation treatment is given. She was told at this time she would need to undergo 7 weeks of radiation treatment in Victoria Mon-Fri.
In preparation for the treatments Dori has undergone an MRI on August 14th in Nanaimo, two dentist appointments on Aug 17/18th to dertermine if she would need any dental care or teeth removed before the treatment and a PET scan on the 24th of Aug in Vancouver ( The PET scan checks to see if the cancer has spread to any other area in the body). Thankfully, the pet scan did NOT show any spread of the cancer. Dori began radiation treatment September 6th.
As many of you know Dori is an amazing person who is always finding the light in a dark situation! This remains true as I have watched my dear friend stay possitive through the most difficult time in her life. This does not mean she doesnt have moments , but she welcomes them and then kindly tells them to GO!
I have been in Dori's life since our early teens and we have been there for each other through many good and bad times. This is one of those bad times and my friend and yours (friend, family, coworker) needs help!
What I know is this is a strain on her financially as she is taking a tremendous decrease in income and has added expenses due to travel to and from Victoria. She also pays for accomadations for her family to be in Victoria during the week while continuing to maintain her home, pay the bills and buy food for her son to stay in their home in Nanaimo while he attends school.
It is unknown at this time how long Dori will be off work, but it will most like exceed 6-8 months. The treatment can cause severe changes to the throat, tongue, saliva taste buds and even her teeth. Radiation causes severe burns to the location it is targeted at and therefore Dori's neck will have radiation burns. If the side affects get to the point that Dori is not able to swollow she will need to be put on a feeding tube. There are many other side affects I will not list here as we are believing for more favorable results. But the reality is that Dori will definitly need time to recover fully before her return to work.
On behalf of Dori and her family as well as myself, I extend a sincere, heartfelt Thankyou to all who give and /or continue to keep Dori in your prayers and thoughts. Continue to send loving and encouraging messages during this difficult time!
Much Love and Blessings to all,
Sincerely,
Carla
