In the heart of Kibera Slum — the largest slum in Sub-Saharan Africa — amidst the challenges of sprawling poverty, George Okoth and Shamick Otieno's story emerges as a beacon of hope. Introduced to ballet through an afterschool program, their raw talent caught the eye of Dance Centre Kenya, leading to scholarships and opportunities that transformed their lives. From boarding houses to prestigious international schools, their dedication to ballet and academics shone brightly.
After graduating from West Nairobi School in 2023, their journey continued with acceptance into East Carolina University. Pursuing studies in dance alongside majors in business and engineering, George and Shamick have continued to thrive, participating in multiple university dance productions, including Fall Dance 2024 and Spring Dance 2025. They’ve also secured Resident Assistant (RA) positions for a second consecutive year to cover their room and board expenses for the upcoming school year.
Yet, the financial burden of tuition remains a significant challenge. Your contribution to Artists for Africa 501(c)3 ensures that every dollar goes directly towards George and Shamick's tuition, safeguarding their dreams of a brighter future. Join us in empowering these talented young men to reach their full potential and inspire others along the way.
