Alex Luey Fights Osteosarcoma - Updated
Donation protected
Hi all,
I am the cousin of Mallory Luey, Alex’s stepmom. I am starting this page after numerous requests from friends, family and the community at large for an online means of offering assistance to Alex Luey and his family. Please note this is the official page for online donations. Any questions can be directed to myself, Mallory, Scott or Cat. As many of you know there is also an option to send donations to the Niagara Falls Minor Hockey Association. Let me preface this with advising that Alex’s parents, Scott and Cat, and his stepmom Mallory have been hesitant to reach out for help. The reality however is that people want to help and therefore this will serve as a platform to offer financial assistance online. Any funds not used in Alex’s journey will be donated back to the organizations that are quickly becoming very important to the Luey family (McMaster Children’s Hospital, Sick Kids, etc.)
For those who are not yet familiar with Alex and the journey he has been thrown into I think it’s important to provide some background. Alex, a typically very active young boy, had been complaining of pain in his leg. After a fall at school Alex’s parents took him to the ER. The time since this visit seems like a blur. As a parent myself I know that my number one goal is to protect my children always from pain. Unfortunately Scott, Mallory and Cat quickly realized this was out of their hands. Imagine the helplessness felt when you find out your baby is about to face a journey that no child should have to deal with. Since this ER visit two weeks ago Alex’s life has involved one hospital visit after another. His diagnosis of osteosarcoma in his right leg, will result in an almost immediate 10-12 weeks of chemotherapy, followed by surgery to amputate. Chemo prior to surgery is an important factor in helping to ensure this dreaded disease does not metastasize. In the coming days Alex and his family will have a defined roadmap outlining what their journey will involve.
Alex’s parents have promised Alex he will never be alone, and in an effort to keep this promise Cat has taken a leave from work. As people who have not been directly touched by something like this it is hard to realize the financial impact it can have. From the little things like fuel, things to keep Alex comfortable at the hospital, etc. to larger things that will be a future reality, such as changes to both of his homes, expenses associated with prosthetics, etc. The goal of this page is simply to remove some of this burden to allow everyone to concentrate on what is most important at present. Alex is essentially a child, turning 12 years old today (October 1st). He deserves all the love and support we as a community can offer up. I recognize not everyone has the means to assist financially and that is completely understandable. Prayers, well wishes and ongoing support for Alex and his family are what is needed most right now. Let’s show them all of these things, in one form or another. #TeamLuey #LueyStrong
