Narcolepsy Service Dog
Donation protected
Hello Everyone! As some of you may already know, due to my Narcolepsy & Cataplexy, I applied for a mobility and alert Service Dog from Canine Partners for Life. I will be one of the first twenty people with Narcolepsy and Cataplexy that Canine Partners for Life has trained a dog to work with. Please take a minute to watch this video and be inspired by what these dogs can do for their partners and be sure to share it with your friends. It is wonderful.
For me, this journey started my third year in college when I was diagnosed with Narcolepsy and Cataplexy. Narcolepsy is an incurable sleep disorder caused by the lack of a chemical in my brain that keeps ‘normal’ people awake. Cataplexy causes my muscles to suddenly weaken, my knees to buckle and me to collapse to the floor causing scrapes, bruises, and the occasional concussion. Frequently, I have sudden sleep attacks throughout the day. A service dog will provide me with much needed stability while I walk, stand and do other everyday activities I no longer take for granted. He will also be able to alert me to my cataplexy and sleep attacks. In addition to support and warnings, he will give me confidence and provide me with greater independence.
With the gift of this companion, comes a lot of financial expenses. Even though I have not been matched with a dog yet, I am starting to fund raise due to the sheer amount of funds needed. When I am matched when my dog, he and I will meet and train for three weeks together in Pennsylvania. Here we will learn about each other and become partners. During those three weeks, I need to cover the cost of various training field trips, travel expenses, lodging, dog food, and a very long list of service dog supplies. Canine Partners asked for me to only pay for a fraction of the $27,000 it cost to train the dog over the last two years. So, this is where I would appreciate your help! My goal is to raise $10,000 to help cover these costs.
