Jason is a normal 12-year-old child who looks healthy and loves school, basketball, baseball, football, amateur boxing, video games, swimming, riding bikes, skating, bowling, dancing and even girls!
Now imagine a parents’ world turned upside down in one night:
On the night of Tuesday, December 1, 2015, as Jason said “good night and I love you” to his parents, his life changed instantly. Jason had a headache that lasted all that day; then when he went to bed a seizure occurred. He awoke to find paramedics at his bedside and being taken by ambulance to the hospital to undergo brain imaging that revealed a cystic lesion on his brain.
He was immediately admitted to the Pediatric ICU. Within a few days, he underwent brain surgery to remove this lesion. The pathology from the tumor confirmed Jason’s condition to be Pleomorphic Xanthoastrocytoma (PXA), a brain tumor that occurs most frequently in children and teenagers.
Jason went home and recuperated and was able to resume most activities he loved to do within 60 days of his surgery. The family believes that only by the Grace of God, the love and support he and his family have been shown before, during and after his surgery; and the many, many prayers for Jason, he had met this challenge and conquered.
September 2016, however, during a recent MRI (only 9 months after his surgery), Jason has been given yet another challenge. This recent MRI revealed a focal enhancing nodule at the anterior aspect of the resection cavity (where the tumor was removed).
Jason and his family are devastated, but understand that this is merely Jason’s path in life; and he will follow his heart and build the strength he needs to overcome this obstacle. Although at times he feels disappointed, he quickly gets over it and continues to be that loveable and playful boy that everyone adores. Through it all and at a very young age, Jason has shown his parents to be courageous and to keep their faith strong. Jason’s optimism is relentless!
Jason will undergo his second brain surgery in November. Unfortunately, this time the tumor indicates focal anaplastic features that will not only require surgery, but also radiation and/or chemo. The doctors feel they can take this tumor out and with radiation treatments, he can continue his teenage years like any other normal 13-year-old.
The family is going to have to endure additional medical expenses and as any family with three (3) kids, their finances are strained. Therefore, this GoFundMe account is being created to help defray some of those medical bills that will be incurred during and after this second surgery.
Jason is the son of Marissa and Esteban Perez and he has an older brother and sister, Esteban, Jr. and Jasmin. The family thanks you from the bottom of their hearts for all your past support and continued support during this time. They believe that prayers are very powerful and ask that you continue to keep Jason and the Perez family in yours.
