On January 23, I was assaulted by a patient while working as a paramedic in Atlanta, GA. I was kicked in the head and after quick trip to the ER, I was told I had a "mild concussion" and that I would be back at work in a week.
Three days after my initial injury I ended up at a second ER with speech problems and right sides weakness. I was assured it would go away on its own.
I was finally diagnosed with a diffuse axonal injury. I have speech delay and block, recurrent falls, am unable to drive and live with ongoing headaches, dizziness and nausea. I walk with a cane.
It's now almost May and I'm still out of work. I spent almost eight weeks battling workers comp for my benefits (which equal about 2/3 of my medic salary) and we were forced to live on just my husband's pay. (He's also a medic.) We got behind. And then we were notified by our apartment complex that our rent was being raised nearly $100 a month bringing our rent for a two bedroom apartment to almost $1000. This caused us to scramble to find a new home and move from Kennesaw to Monroe piling on more bills.
We are still behind. We are just asking for any help in getting us caught up as I will be out of work for at least a year due to my injury. They are unsure if I will ever be able to be a paramedic again.
Thank you so much for reading this.
