Youth Worlds Championships in China

Hello to everyone who is reading this. I’m Nathan Withey and I’m 19 years old. I’m a rock climber from Southern California and I’ve just received an invitation a few days ago for a chance to go and compete in Guangzhou, China, this November 2016 for Team USA at the Youth Worlds Championships! I’m still so excited that I can’t believe it is reality!
I’ve been rock climbing for a total of 7 years now and competing since I was 12. I’ve only qualified for Nationals a handful of times but this past year I climbed amongst the top climbers at SCS Nationals in Atlanta Georgia. I placed high enough to receive the last invitation to join Team USA. I’m one of five boys to represent Team USA in the Male Junior category, ages 17-19.
Only about two years ago I really found out that I had the potential of becoming an elite climber and once I realized this I dedicated my life to training. Ever since then I’ve been working as hard as I possibly could by climbing laps upon laps and training a minimum of 5 days a week. I couldn’t have made it this far without the support of my family and friends cheering me on and pushing me to work harder. My past coaches have included Bryan Leiper, Joe Morgan, Kyle Owen, Trevor Smith, Sarah Richardson, and Chad Gilbert. They have pushed me to my full potential to become the strongest competitor I can be. I never would have thought that I could have made it this far but now that it’s a reality I’m just speechless and so shocked and I know that I couldn’t have done it without all of your support.
My family has always supported me 100% but now that I’m an adult I want to do this on my own and with your generous support. I work for Sender One while I’m attending college several days a week as well as two nights. I am so lucky that they have asked me to assist with coaching their youth climbing team. As a member of the Sender One Youth Climbing Team I know from both perspectives now what it takes to become a top climber and a good role model for these young climbers.
This comp is very special to me because after Nationals I thought that I was finished with competing in the youth circuit. It was now time to train for competing in Open Nationals with all the pros. But now I know that I have one last chance to compete at my first World Youth Championships and what’s a better way to end your youth climbing career than by ending it climbing with the best of the best in the world!!
I’ve never done anything like this before so I don’t know how it will work out but I have positive vibes and I’m thankful for all the time that you have spent reading about my upcoming competition. I hope to be able to return the favor in some way for everyone that has supported me by reading this or helping me throughout my climbing career. Thank you I appreciate you all for your support and encouragement. I wish you a wonderful day!
