My name is Brice Capangpangan. I'm a freshman at UC San Diego (specifically, I am a student in Revelle). I am a computer science major.
I graduated from Hawthorne Math and Science Academy as one of the top 5 students in my class, and I held leadership positions in Key Club and Tolerance Club.
As for my family situation, I have two brothers and a single mother. One of my brothers is a fellow student at UCSD, and is in his third year. My other brother is the eldest and has moved out, but still receives financial support for things such as health and car insurance. In order to support her three kids, my mother is currently working two full-time jobs.
I attend college to help not only myself in the future, but also my mother as soon as possible. Although I was already interested in the world of computer science, I was driven to the field because of its expanding opportunities. I want to be able to graduate and earn a job in the field ASAP in order to support my mother enough so she does not need to work as hard for much longer.
Even with scholarships and grants, I need to take on thousands of dollars of loans which still do not completely pay for my studies. I still need to pay around $1000 per year, and that is not including supplies or books. From what I understand, my mother only barely makes it past all the bills, and that was before I even started to attend college. In order to do what I can now to help, I am planning on reapplying for work-study and taking on a job while I am in college. I would love the chance to receive any help that would allow me to not need to ask for more money from my mother and maybe even allow me to invest all my time in ensuring that I succeed here at UC San Diego.
Any and all assistance is appreciated; even a small gesture like sharing my page with others is a great help. Thank you for reading my story.
