Evelyn’s Surgery Fund
Evelyn, a beloved member of our church community,
was born with a genetic bone growth disorder called pseudoachondroplasia, which occurs in about 1 in 50,000 to 300,000 births. Those affected by pseudoachondroplasia (http:www.supportpsach.com/about)
experience limited range of motion in joints and early-onset joint pain (osteoarthritis). Many experience significant joint pain throughout their life and undergo multiple orthopedic surgeries and joint replacements.
Evelyn has been lucky to reach age six without needing any corrective surgeries, but will be traveling to see Dr. Dror Paley West Palm Beach, FL in February 2017 for her first major surgery. He is a world-renowned and respected orthopedic surgeon who Evelyn’s parents, Greg and Mary, feel is the absolute best professional to be helping her live a fuller, more pain-free life. Pseudoachondroplasia is very rare, and he is one of the very few doctors who has had much experience with the disorder, among many other of the rarest orthopedic conditions in the world. Evelyn will undergo a bilateral osteotomy and lengthening that will help straighten the leg bones and align the joints from her hips down to ankles. It will correct the bowing in her legs and hopefully eliminate some of the pain she experiences from both daily activities and over exertion. The surgery will involve an extensive rehabilitation period, requiring rigorous, daily physical therapy at Dr. Paley’s office for at least three months.
Greg and Mary, along with their other two children, plan to be by her side as much as they can. The extended family stay in Florida is going to bring many extra expenses, including the medical and therapy bills not covered by insurance, local housing for at least three months at the Quantum House http://www.quantumhouse.org/ (on the St. Mary’s Medical Center grounds) and back-and-forth transportation costs for the family and support system. Even once Evelyn is home, she will require return trips to Florida for check-ups and to have Dr. Paley remove the metal fixators that will be attached to her legs.
Any amount you can donate will be immensely appreciated, to help alleviate some of the many challenges and burdens the Henderson’s will face. If any raised funds are unused during this surgery and rehabilitation process, they will be saved in an account for Evelyn’s future medical and surgery costs. The family is eternally grateful for your support and prayers during this journey!
