Birthday Roadbike for Rick Muthiah
Donation protected
Hello friends and family of Rick Muthiah!
Would you like to take part in a fun group-surprise-birthday-gift for Rick? I, Joel, am organizing a goal to raise $2000 USD to buy Rick a good quality road/racing bicycle as a kickoff to his 50th year! He turns 49 in December.

Here's the story:
In July 2016, Rick participated with six of his good college friends (including me!) in a fabulous hiking and biking trip to Italy and France, thanks to the generous gift and planning of Taylor University friend, Dave Askeland.
If you've talked to Rick at all about this experience, you will know that he fully anticipated being the slowpoke of the group, and he was apologizing for this before we even began. To his surprise, he actually ended up as one of the stronger riders, pressing with confidence up several classic Alpine climbs, including the famed Alp d'Huez of Tour de France folklore and the 10,000-foot vertical climb of Cols du Telegraph and Galibier.
With a boost to his confidence, Rick returned to Oregon with a gained enjoyment and interest in cycling, and he's been out for rides on his own and with groups since being home. He's still riding his 1986 clunker and is beginning to shop around for a "new" used bike.
I've talked to Rick, and he won't spend more than about $500 on a bike. Personally, I think he should have something better. I'll work with his brother, Rob, to find a carbon/fiber roadbike with good components, and these start at about $2000. If we raise more, we'll just get a little bit better bike (pros ride $10000 bikes). So now Beth is trying to casually dissuade Rick from buying that $540 tank that he saw on Craigslist last weekend. We'll try to keep it a secret, unless Rick gets focused and determined (which we all know he can do).
I can't think of someone for whom I'd rather do this, and I hope you can join in the fun of contributing to this gift! I'm hoping to have money raised by the Thanksgiving holiday so we can begin identifying the range of bike frames and components that these contributions can buy.
Logistical Details:
Since I live in Canada, this Go-Fund-Me campaign is listed in Canadian dollars (about .75 of a US Dollar), so the goal is set for $2750 CAN. Please feel free to share the campaign link by emailing it to others who know Rick, but don't post it on FaceBook (even though this is a fast way to gain support) because Rick will probably find out about it that way (he's friends with the world).
Giving online is super easy with credit or debit card; keep in mind that if you use a card, you'll be donating in Canadian dollars, so for $100USD the equivalent right now would be $133CAN. If you are organized enough to send a check, we will save on the ~8% fee, and we can still list it on this campaign as an "offline donation" toward the goal. Send checks in USD to Rob Muthiah at 2056 Sinaloa Ave., Altadena, CA 91001, and send me a message through this site to let me know.
Thanks for your friendship with my good friend!
