As some of you may or not know, Kyle and I adopted Ruby from a local shelter in March of 2012. She was in a cage, quiet and scared, but when they took her out to meet us, she plopped in my lap and refused to leave. I was a goner. We brought her home and she transformed into this wild, energetic, agile, smart, and sassy girl we love today. She could run around the yard being chased for hours, or I could put her on her leash and she could easily trot along side me for 4 or 5 quick miles, no problem. Well that all changed in early 2015 when she damaged and eventually tore her cranial cruciate ligament in her left knee (canine version of our ACL). After exhausting all other options, and saving up some money, she was finally able to have the surgery in July 2015. While she healed nicely, the doctors warned us that there is a 50% chance of tearing the other knee's CCL. While her left leg healed, she relied heavily on her (now weaker) right leg. Being a year post surgery, we thought we would finally be seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, but yesterday we found out she has torn her CCL in her right knee. We got an estimate from the surgeon for $3000 which includes surgery, hospital stay, pain medications, anesthesia, and follow up x-rays and appointments to monitor the healing process. Ruby is 5 years old and lived almost half of her life limping in one way or another. We just think she deserves to be able to enjoy taking walks without being in pain, even if her running days are behind her.
