We created this page in an effort to assist Drew and Phyllis Atkins, along with their three children.
Some of you might know them as they are both accomplished Coast Salish artists. They operate a small gallery at their home called k’wy’I’y’e Spring Salmon Studio. Their art can also be found in and about Fort Langley where they currently reside. The name of their studio is reflective of a past tradition that they participate in and that is community fishing. It is something they have enjoyed doing as a family and helps them feel connected to our Kwantlen ancestors that fished the mighty Fraser since time immemorial.
Unfortunately this year, despite fishing openings being non-existent, the family for the first time would not have been able to participate. They have also been struggling to find time to enjoy their passion and that is telling traditional stories in a contemporary way through art. Drew was diagnosed with cancer this past year and it has caused a great deal of strain on the family resources. You can imagine already the emotional thoughts that would go through one’s mind but then to add to it the stress of struggling to provide for your family.
I ask that you consider helping Drew and Phyllis with a contribution. Any amount is very much appreciated. They are proud people and not ones that will ever ask for help. Yet when it comes to others in need there have been countless times that they have stepped up to volunteer their time and or their art to a good cause. It is now their time of need and I ask that you consider a small contribution to assist their family. You can know that your contribution will be going to help a loving family get back up on their feet and to allow Drew to focus on more important things like his recovery. I want to thank you for helping out and for taking the time to read my post today.
