My name is Laura Smith, and I'm a high school teacher, dancer, mother and adventurer who was diagnosed with breast cancer this July.
I'll be having 20 radiation treatments beginning Oct. 10, 2016.
To bring a silver lining to this whole experience, I'm hosting this "Heel-a-thon." I will wear some of my craziest high heels every day of treatment, and post the pictures along with a tally of the total inches of heels I've worn.
You can pledge by the inch, or pledge a flat fee. In addition, for every Facebook Like, I'll donate a dollar of my own, up to $500.
All of the money is going to Living Well Cancer Resource Center in Geneva, IL. https://livingwellcrc.org/
This center provides free services to those going through any type of cancer, their families, and their care-givers. Just a few of the services Living Well provides--completely free of charge-- are support groups for patients and caregivers, art therapy for children, healthy cooking lessons, relaxing massages, wigs for chemo patients, and yoga.
I was lucky--my cancer was slow-growing, caught early, and very treatable. However, the mental toll of dealing with a diagnosis, waiting and worrying about all of tests, fearing the future, and balancing job, family, and health are overwhelming. When I hit my lowest point, Living Well was there for me. Staffed by volunteers who are all survivors, I was welcomed, set up with a licensed counselor, and offered a variety of services to help me relax and connect. It is an amazing resource that I am so grateful we have in our community.
Living Well is sponsored entirely by grants and donations. Help me support this wonderful resource that has helped so many cancer patients, survivors, and families.
