Mike Bruns my husband was injuried by a rock when he was racing in a heat race at a dirt track (A Mod).   He was in a  coma and currrently has improved to a minimal consciences state.  He had a problem between  1 and 2 corners because his car (A mod) slowed down on the 2 lap and almost stopped on the back straightaway.  He then picked it up raced eight more laps to the finish and challenged a car who wanted to pass him at the checkered flag.  He then made one more lap to slow down and exited the race track. He drove to our pits and got out said a rock had hit him and he was having trouble breathing.  He sat down minutes later passed out.  He  had stopped breathing and then went in to cardiac arrest.   My son when to go get the paramedics on the 4 wheeler.  The ambulance would not start so one of the paramedics grabbed what she needed and got on the 4 wheeler to get to our pits.  At that time he was in cardiac arrest.  I have not heard my husbands voice since July 15th when this happened.  Mike was making some improvements and was accepted at Madonna rehab Hospital but he needed to be awake for 3 hours and to follow commands during that time.  So to get him to that point we needed a little more time.  We were starting to look for a skilled nursing home but he developed an infection and then had a fever related seizure.  At this time (because of the sit back)  the health insurance company wants to classify him as custodial care (not skilled)this mean I will have to self pay going foward and at this time I will have to pay up front for his care at a nursing home or inhome.  My husband has been racing for 42 years started out in Hobby then to late model and in 1989 went to A mod and after a three year break, because of a shoulder injury (this was his first race since his injury) was just racing that night to mainly test and tune our son's A Mod because he wanted to get back in to a Late Model and race again.   October 22 2016 he will be the first inductee in to the Lisbon (Sheyenne River Speedwayrace track) hall of fame.  Mike new about this and was so excited the day of the accident he had just been told of the date of the Banquet(10-22-2016).  He loves racing and so do I.  Our kids were raised at the track it was family.  Even having trouble breathing did not stop him from finishing the race that night.  Even in a coma he will open his eyes when he hears a nascar or dirt track race on TV or video.
