Hanson Park Debate Team
Donation protected
**Update! Our inital goal for start-up funds was met! I have raised our goal so to help cover for other costs that have occurred over the coarse of the season. The season itself is over, and I will share some testimonials from my students ASAP.
This year at my school, Hanson Park, I will be coaching our new policy debate team! Debate is an academically rigorous, student-centered activity that gives middle and high-schoolers an opportunity to practice critical college and career readiness skills including:
-Critical thinking
-Public speaking
-Note taking
-Policy research
-Teamwork
The Chicago Debate League's middle school league counts many of the most prestigious and exclusive schools in the city as its members. Hanson Park is a neighborhood school that is about 91% low-income. But despite being a high-needs school, we do an incredible job of educating our students, and are rated Level 1+, the highest rating given by CPS. I want nothing more than to provide the same opportunities to our bright and talented students that more prestigious schools are able to provide to theirs.
In case you are unaware, CPS is in the midst of a budget crisis, meaning our school does not have the money to fund a lot of things, including a debate program. However, I do not want a lack of district funding to prevent our students from having a team. Are you willing to help by making a donation? Running a team in the CDL would cost us at least $6,500. Some of these costs do not come until later in the season, but we do need $1,500 in the next couple weeks to get our program up and running. Any donation you are able to make- large or small- will make the world of difference to our students!
