My name is Cyrena Scott, and I am currently studying at Saint Mary’s College of California (SMC) as a junior. I am completing a double major in Economics and Sociology, and plan on graduating in the Spring of 2018. One of the many incredible opportunities at SMC is during the month of January, students are required to take only one course, and some of those happen to travel abroad. I, personally, have been given the chance to travel to Kenya, Africa to take part in the course entitled “Empowered Writing: Writing with Kenyan Women and Nonprofits.” Not only does this specifically apply to both of my areas of study, but it also speaks to my devotion to education for everyone, especially young women. In the description below, I have given one an idea of what I will be doing while in Africa for 3 weeks.
“In 2007, co-founders Jenni and Jason Doherty started a school: Daraja Academy in Laikipia County, Kenya. Daraja means bridge; girls of Daraja Academy are committed to building bridges of knowledge in their communities.
Hundreds apply for a few select spots to receive a free secondary education in Kenya. Students in 8th grade score at the top of their classes across the country but would be prevented from pursuing further education by community norms for women and extreme poverty but for the intercession of Daraja Academy… In addition to building their own futures and planning to be community leaders, students are also engaging in intertribal dialogue that offers the possibility of upsetting generations of prejudice and fear and intertribal conflict.
In this Jan Term course, we will learn to engage in pre-travel studies to establish an understanding of the community context and also build our writing skill sets. We will then have three-week immersion experience, learning about the life and culture of Kenya from texts and directly from the women of Kenya. We will support local nonprofit organizations, particularly those focused on women and children, through writing."
This gives me a chance to participate in a completely different culture from my own as well as an incredible moment to gain life experience from people that could possible change my life in the most profound ways. This is all accomplished through mentoring young women in their writing as well as working with nonprofit organizations to expand their horizons. I strongly encourage one to watch the video below as it was one of the main factors to swayed me toward taking part in the course. Additionally, there is a link provided for the website of Daraja Academy.

Although this is an incredible privilege with which I have been presented, most positively “once in a lifetime,” the cost is $3,800. This kind of monetary expense is not one that I am able to complete myself due to schooling. Because of this, I am asking for anyone who is willing and able to contribute any amount that is feasible. I have set a goal of $3,500 which would cover most of the above cost mentioned. With this help, I will be able to set foot in a completely new country, to me, and change the lives of a few people all the while changing my own life. Something like this could possibly be a career goal for me, so I am hoping to gain some experience in this way. I thank everyone in advance for the generous contributions, every dollar helps! Even if one cannot afford to contribute in a monetary sense, I would greatly appreciate the sharing of this page to help spread the word and help me accomplish a dream!
