Last Friday, my brother was painting a mural and jumped off a slipping ladder and fractured his heel. The fracture requires surgery, which is set for this Wednesday. Unfortunately, the basic health insurance CJ has will force him to wait several weeks for surgery. With this type of heel fracture, the sooner the bone is realigned, the better chance  of a full recovery.  The surgery will cost about 12,000, a small price to pay to walk again.
Most of you know, my brother quit his job in Colorado last summer to move to San Diego and help our mom fight cancer. CJ spent every night and every day in the hospital with my mom. He was her biggest cheerleader. He took the best care of my mom, helping her laugh, smile, and make the most of each day, up until her very last breath. I know that a broken heel is a small problem when compared to bigger struggles in today's world.
