Gemma Ariel was born on June 12th, 2016, just under one month earlier than her due date. A beautiful, peaceful, and happy baby, Gemma was born a fighter. Having found out at around 17 weeks of pregnancy that Gemma was diagnosed with Hypoplastic Right Heart Syndrome, it was known before birth that she would require several surgeries, one within the first few days of birth.
Once Gemma was born, however, a few other medical complications were discovered, especially with her lungs. Her first surgery had been delayed, and then less than a month ago, Deanna and Dan were told Gemma was no longer a candidate for open heart surgery. It was decided she would have a cardiac cath procedure, which was a safer option for her in her high-risk condition. On Friday, October 7th, Gemma had a successful procedure, where after 4 hours they were able to put not 1 or 2, but FIVE stents in! Everyone was happy with the results.
Though she remained strong and fighting for so long, her little lungs realized that they did all they could, and early in the morning on Sunday October 16th, 2016, Gemma peacefully passed away in Deanna's arms.
As Gemma remained hospitalized in the NICU at Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital in NYC for her entire 4 months and 4 days, travel expenses to be with her as much as possible were difficult, as well as keeping up with household expenses. Due to Gemma's condition, Deanna has not returned to work, leaving Deanna and Dan living off of one salary.
We are looking to raise money to assist Deanna and Dan with Gemma's medical bills, as well as for the various funeral costs they will now have to tend to. Any amount possible, no matter how small, is beyond appreciated by all. Every little bit counts to help Deanna and Dan lay their precious little cupcake to rest, and to finally "bring her home".
Reast peacefully, Gemma Ariel <3
