Greetings,
My name is Patience Evans-Kerley and my family is in need of a miracle. In the last five years we have been in a world of what felt like medical vocabulary lessons and going from doctor to doctor trying to do "patch work" medical care for my very unhealthy body on a teacher salary. I was a middle and high school teacher/coach for 15 years and enjoyed heping my students see real world necessities within my academic lessons. I was even applying for graduate school. My health had been declining for sometime, but I always just pushed through to keep moving forward. My extended family and friends were helping as much as possible and it was a gift.
However, things took a terrible turn for the worst almost 3 years ago. After another failed surgery my friend, daughter, and I were in a terrible car accident. Someone was on their cell phone sitting on an exit ramp of a major highway. We were located on the frontage road 4 lanes away. He decided to exit and cut through all 4 lanes at once. At that moment I knew if I continued to slow down he would hit my toddler in the backseat. So I took the hit and knew immediately that I had lost feeling in my left leg. For a very short while after the accident I was able to continue using my walker, but had no feeling and very little movement in my left leg. Eventually due to safety ( I could no longer use my foot) and extreme pain I was instructed to use a wheelchair, however I continued to teach. More surgeries and complications followed and working was no longer an option due to rest and very strong pain medication.
Now I am a paraplegic. Unfortunantly insurance companies don't like to purchase wheelchairs more than once in 3-5 years. I have been blessed with an amazing support system that only God could have brought together for my husband, kids, and myself. I am still in physical therapy and the love that my therapist and other medical staff have shown me just re-affirms that helping people is a ministry, They remind me every session that I am getting stronger and it is ok to ask for help.
I miss helping individuals and families in a more direct way, but in order to get back to work I need a safer chair that I can lift and one that supports my body appropriately. I want to show my kids and students that you really can accomplish your goal, no matter what your circumstance. We have tried to show our children the value in believing in yourself and the charity/kindness of others. God has revealed to us that there are people in this world who look for opportunities to help because that is what we have been doing for years. Currently we have been piecing wheelchair parts together through donations. Having a new chair would change my circumstances as well as my family's lives. Our goal is to have a new chair before the end of October 2016. Every patient I see in therapy I tell them to believe in the impossible. Please help me and my family because we are believing in the IMPOSSIBLE too!
