Pookie's Urgent Life-Saving Surgery

Donation protected
We’re fundraising for urgent life saving surgery for our bunny Pookie. Pookie is 2 years old bunny who was rescued and brought to live with us all the way from Texas.

Until last January she was a healthy cage-free bunny living with her best friend Vinnie in our house and enjoying her hay and snacks. Unfortunately, she was born with a genetic disorder that is quite common in small bunny breeds, where one of her back teeth grows sideways. In her case, the tooth is growing into her eye socket, causing the eye to bulge and creating a cyst. Eventually the pain becomes unbearable, and they stop eating and die within days.

Such condition is terminal unless a surgery is performed fast to remove the tooth and the cyst. Unfortunately, her eye would most likely be removed as well, but our vet told us that bunnies do just fine with one eye, and in any case loosing an eye is better then the alternative. Plus, Vinnie and Pookie are strongly bonded bunnies, and we worry what would happen to him if we don't save her. We already observed him grooming her incessantly in the past few weeks, and Vinnie was never a fan of grooming someone else.

We are doing our best to keep her alive and comfortable, which includes many trips to the vet and administering medication such as antibiotics and Metacam (to manage pain). Our best chance is to put her in surgery some time next week, with a CT scan prior to that to get a better picture of the condition. The closest clinic that has the necessary equipment and expertise is up in Seattle area in Bothel, WA, and we are making plans for a trip as soon as possible. The cost estimates we were given are $1200 for CT scan, around $3500 for the surgery, and post surgery care probably reaching over $3000, but they can't give us a more accurate number before CT scan results are in.

We appreciate everyone’s support and are grateful for any donation to help offset some of the cost of this surgery and save our beloved Pookie's life. Our vet is giving her between two weeks and two months, so we must hurry.
