A Neighbor in (Desperate) Need
You may have seen recent posts from our Briarhills’ neighbor, Melanie Prokop, describing the dire situation she & her husband, Andy, currently find themselves in. Melanie has given me permission to post details of their crisis, so we might collectively consider, if some of us might be able to help.
First, before summarizing their plight, I must admit there is much I do not know, but nonetheless, the core issue is Andy Prokop is in the midst, of a serious health crisis. I’m unsure if it is pancreatic cancer, but have been told he has problems with his pancreas & liver. Andy has undergone the complex & risky Whipple procedure, commonly used to address pancreatic cancer. This occurred on Sept 8. 201, Everything was going well after the Whipple procedure but in late October he could not get out of bed and became very ill, turns out he had three abscesses on his liver was treated with medication and seemed to be doing better. Christmas day he became violently ill and was throwing up un-digested foods and had unstoppable diarrhea. Was admitted to the hospital the tests showed where his intestine and stomach were reattached had ulcerated shut, this was treated with medication. For the next few months he could not gain weight and had constant diarrhea. Doctors tried all kinds of treatments but it did not seem to help. In late April, his body started retaining water and his weight went from 145 to 180. He also developed and a Peri Rectal Fistula which had to be surgically repaired He was back in the hospital again for nine days in May. Through alot of testing doctors figured out he needs another Fistula surgery, needs a colonoscopy and a stint in his portal vein to the liver. Doctors say after these surgery’s he should get back to a more normal life.
Second, Andy lost his job & health insurance, a while back, due to these health problems. Because of her lack of a degree, Melanie has found it difficult to find employment, with health benefits. Nevertheless, while continuing to look, she’s been proactive in seeking additional odd jobs, e.g., recently cutting down small trees & pulling out stumps, with her truck, & creating a large flower bed, for a neighbor. She states she is willing to do almost any kind of work, including helping with the elderly or pets, cleaning or power washing, or preparing & delivering fresh meals.
Third, these problems have precipitated a severe financial crisis & they are close to losing their lovely home, along the Buffalo Bayou & Terry Hershey Trail. Melanie previously posted their address to ND, as they seek a buyer for their home, so I will repost it here. They live at 14118 Briarhills Pkwy & the asking price is $399K, “as is”. Their kitchen remodeling project needs to be completed, but they have all the high-end appliances, ready to be installed. There are lots of other small things that also will need to be completed to get the maximum value for the house.
The other solution to the house is to get a Home Improvement loan - but not being employed and behind on payments - that is not going to happen. So if anyone wants to invest in the completion of the house - they need $85K and are willing to payback at closing $95 - $100K at closing - will place a second lien on the house behind Chase Bank. The remodel should take 2 -3 months and then depending on the housing market the house should sell quickly . This gets the Prokops maximum value for the house.
