Hello Everyone!
We are proud to announce that we are beginning our second fundraising event! First and foremost, I want to thank all those who helped donate to our first round of funding. We raised close to $15,000 in our first round of funding but had lots of expenses to ensure our foundation was set up the right way. This page will explain what we have done so far, where the funds have been going, and what we will be putting the money towards in the future!
There are two ways to donate: the first is to donate through this GoFundMe Page.
The second is to write a check!
Since we are a 501c3 donations will be tax deductible. We ask if you write a check to include a note stating your name and email address so we can respond with a thank you!
The check should be written out to: "William Gaines Gwathmey Foundation" and can be mailed to:

Who Are We:
We are the William Gaines Gwathmey Foundation (WGGF). The foundation was created after our beloved friend passed away. To honor Willie we created a foundation in his name aimed at helping mentor the underserved community through academics and basketball. We are in the first stage of a charity that will be here to stay.
What We Have Done in the Community:
- 5 Basketball Seminars at the Jefferson Academy
- Took a group of 20 Jefferson Academy students to a GW basketball game and a tour of GW's campus. Transportation, lunch, and tickets were supplied by the foundation
-Partnered with the IMF and held a 7-week Financial Literacy Program at the IMF for 15 high school students from School Without Walls and Eastern High school
The WGG Foundation has been off to a rapid start since its creation in November of 2014. We have teamed up with Serve Your City DC (SYC) to gain access to the local community of Washington, D.C. Through our partnership with SYC we have been able to have hands on basketball seminars with the kids of Jefferson Academy, a middle school located in Washington D.C. So far we have held five seminars where we teach the kids basketball lessons and reward the kids based on life skills such as sportsmanship, mutual respect, and hustle. We have bought prizes such as Wizard tickets, basketballs, footballs, Wizard T-shirts, mini basketball hoops, gift cards, and many more. At our first event each and every kid went home with a brand new Nike backpack.
To further our relationship and outreach with the Jefferson Academy, the foundation paid for 20 students to be taken on a bus from the Jefferson Academy to the George Washington University where we took the students on a tour of the campus, out to lunch, and to a GW Basketball game.
To jumpstart our academic mentorship arm of our charity we partnered with the IMF and helped create the first ever Financial Literacy Program held at the IMF's headquarters. Each week a member of the WGG Foundation and employees at the IMF created a module to teach 9th and 10th grade students. This event was a huge success and we look forward to being an integral part of the IMF's Financial Literacy program in years to come.
Where the Funds Are Going:
To create the WGG Foundation the correct way, we have had many initial start up costs. We have paid lawyers to appropiately set up our 501c3, pay an annual consulting fee to ensure proper entrance into the middle schools and high schools that we are serving, bring prizes for each kid to go home with at the Jefferson Academy's basketball seminars, and hope to bring another group of students to GW's campus next year as well. We have also created a website that will be fully operational this summer.
Future Goals:
The WGGF Foundation wants to operate in Washington D.C. and in New York. To ensure the success of the foundation we have created a student organization at GWU that was just approved to be operational in the Fall of 2016. As many of us have already graduated and continue to graduate we will set up our foundation in New York as well. The foundation in New York will focus more on the mentorship aspect that we want our charity to provide. As we evolve in our second stage of our charity we will create a platform for those in New York to give hands on help through our charity.
