Imagine a group of individuals serving life sentences without parole. To many, their pasts overshadow them, but within prison walls, they are determined to create change and healing that reach far beyond their confines.

On October 24, 2025, these incarcerated individuals will take part in a transformative Walk-a-Thon, dedicating every step and each dollar raised to Shriners Children’s Northern California a hospital renowned for giving children facing complex medical challenges a new chance at life. This is so much more than rehabilitation; it is a profound act of “living amends,” where redemption sparks positive ripples for children in need.

This powerful movement began with the first annual Walk-a-Thon on October 16, 2024. Incarcerated residents joined forces in a groundbreaking initiative, raising significant funds and demonstrating that hope doesn’t stop at the prison gate. The success of this inaugural event exceeded all expectations, inspiring new collaborations and setting the stage for an even greater impact in 2025.

The effort extends far beyond prison walls. On the same day, supporters, advocates, and community members will gather for a companion Walk-a-Thon at the California State Capitol. There, Californians of all backgrounds can walk in solidarity with incarcerated participants, amplifying the mission and publicly celebrating the giving spirit that sustains Shriners.

Why does this matter for Shriners? More than 70% of the hospital’s funding relies on philanthropy. Donations provide world-class care whether in orthopedics, burns, reconstructive surgery, or rehabilitation to every child, regardless of their ability to pay. Nearly 80% of all contributions go directly to patient care, research, and education, making new treatments and a brighter future possible for thousands each year.
