Winston's Wheels To Independence
Donation protected
See that handsome devil in the photo? That's Winston.
Winston is a husband, a father, brother, son, uncle, a friend and an awesome Poppy to his grandchildren! He's just like many of you reading about his story right now.
At only 64 yrs old Winston has diabetes, neuropathy, aggressive spinal stenosis and early onset dementia. He has worked hard his whole life as a fisherman until he had to come ashore to look after his wife when she became ill. Until recently Winston was a custodian at a local school. The years at sea and manual labour have taken a hard toll on his body. What should be the best golden years of his life, is actually turning out to be the biggest struggle he has ever faced.
Winston is no longer able to walk without the assistance of a walker for very short distances. He has limited mobility and strength in his arms in part due to a work injury and because of his illnesses. He now requires the use of a motorized wheelchair and modifications to his home so he can stay with his wife Ellen. He and Ellen have spent a lifetime helping people in need in their community and now they are graciously asking for karma to come around to help Winston in his time of need.
The wheelchair that he has been fitted for will cost in excess of $9600. His health benefits end in October and the benefits provider has declined his submission for the chair. He does have a scooter however it no longer meets his needs as his health continues to deteriorate. Unfortunately due to the cost of getting a used van, chair lift, a ramp for his home and other costly expenses related to Winston's condition he is unable to pay for his wheelchair. This leads us to where we are today and why we are reaching out to you to help us achieve our goal of at least $9600 within 3 months. Some donations have thankfully been received from family and friends but we have so much further to go!
Nothing would make Winston and his family more happy than to be able to see him regain some independence and confidence by being able to get around on his own. He is entering his golden years and should be able to enjoy them as such! He is a simple everyday man with simple dreams. He would love to continue cheering on his grandson's at their hockey and soccer games as he has always done. He wants to be be able to spend time with his youngest grandchildren on the playground and at family gatherings. He would like to continue to be active in the community in some capacity as he has done for his entire life. Most importantly he would love to be able to accompany Ellen on outings and enjoy his life as he used to.
To say Winston and his family would be and are thankful for your support is a total understatement. Your donation will 100% go towards the cost of Winston's chair and medical needs! No matter how big or small of a donation Winston and his family thank you from the bottom of their hearts for giving an extra special Poppy the opportunity to enjoy his life to the best of his ability in comfort, accessibility and confidence.
